Did you know that BPD symptoms often overlap those of other mental health disorders, such as anxiety and major depression??? Following the steps below will keep you on track toward an accurate diagnosis and proper treatment. Find a Mental Health Professional Look for a mental health professional with experience diagnosing and treating people with BPD. In addition, if you have health insurance, consider asking the insurance company to give you the names of nearby mental health professionals with the expertise youre seeking who also take your insurance. If you get this information, ask how many treatment sessions theyll cover and how much your co-pay will be. If you dont have health insurance, you may qualify for public assistance programs or services through your state or regions department of mental health or social services. What types of mental health professionals can do a BPD assessment, provide a diagnosis, and treat you or refer you to a therapist who better matches your treatment needs? They include: PsychologistsPsychiatristsSocial workersLicensed mental health counselorsPsychiatric-mental health nurses Generally, psychologists have the most training in psychological assessment. So you may want to start your search with this group. Most psychologists will have a Ph.D. ?or PsyD after their names. Before you make your first call to a therapist, go online to review his or her education, training, and experience. That way, you can check off the most promising names on your list and call them first. Having this information before you call also means you dont have to ask about it when you schedule your appointment. Schedule an Assessment Once you have a list of BPD therapists who appear to meet your requirements, start at the top and call to schedule an appointment for a BPD assessment. Besides scheduling your appointment, the person who answers the therapists phone can probably tell you what a BPD assessment will cost and whether your insurance is accepted. Next, ask to speak with the therapist, or, if thats not possible, ask if he or she will call you for a brief introductory discussion. If you do get to speak with the therapist, try to get a sense of how comfortable you feel discussing your symptoms with this person. If youre reasonably satisfied with what you hear and how you feel, keep the appointment. If you arent, thank the therapist for speaking with you, hang up, and call back to cancel the appointment. Then try the next name on your list. Start the Assessment Process When you arrive for your first therapy session, its normal to feel nervous and uncomfortable, particularly if youve never done this before. Its not easy to meet a new person and share private details about your life. However, keep in mind that the more direct and honest you are during your BPD assessment, the more you will get out of it. Your BPD assessment may take one session or several sessions. Your therapist will tell you how long the assessment will take and what types of tests or interviews will be completed if any. Different providers use different tools to conduct an assessment. Generally, you can expect the therapist to ask questions about your current and past symptoms, family and work history, and current life situation. Some therapists will also give you a short questionnaire to fill out and/or administer a psychological test, which is typically longer and asks more questions. You can also ask any questions you may have. Borderline Personality Disorder Discussion Guide Get our printable guide to help you ask the right questions at your next doctors appointment. Download PDF Receive a Diagnosis Youll probably receive a diagnosis after your BPD assessment is completed. However, if your therapist needs more information before making a diagnosis, he or she may refer you to a specialist or your primary care doctor for further assessment. Reasons for this include: Your symptoms may suggest the possibility of a non-BPD diagnosis, and the therapist may want to get another specialists evaluation. If youve had one or more serious head injuries, you may be referred for a specialists assessment of whether some or all of your symptoms are due to this cause rather than a mental health disorder. You may be referred to your primary care doctor for an assessment of any other medical conditions that could be causing your symptoms. However, its more likely youll receive a diagnosis at the end of your BPD assessment. Your therapist will also explain more about the problems your symptoms are causing and recommend treatment options that may help you feel better. Your therapist may provide some of your treatment or all of it. If necessary, he or she may refer you for part of your therapy to another mental health professional with special expertise. Pakistanââ¬â¢s War on Terror Up to and Beyond 2014 Free Essays
While Pakistan continues to be a frontline state in the global war on terror, it is simultaneously fighting domestic terrorism in a war that will seemingly continue well beyond 2014. In recent months, terror attacks targeting the Shia Hazara minority in Baluchistan indicate a transformation of the terror problem in Pakistan. The Tehrik-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) and Lashkar-e-Jhangvi present two different sides of Pakistanââ¬â¢s terrorism problem, however, the two organizations have increasingly converged operationally to the extent that Pakistan cannot eliminate one without simultaneously confronting the other. We will write a custom essay sample on Pakistanââ¬â¢s War on Terror Up to and Beyond 2014 or any similar topic only for you Order Now BACKGROUND: The September 11 terrorist attacks on the U. S. in which thousands of innocent lives were lost led Pakistan to join the U. S. -led global war against international terrorism in which Pakistan has over the years made an invaluable contribution. However, with the passage of time, Washington increasingly came to view Islamabad as part of the problem rather than the solution. Most U. S. and European policy makers believe that Pakistan is providing a safe haven for the Taliban and Al-Qaeda. Western media is full of stories about a presence of the Taliban leadership in Pakistan, including of Mullah Omarââ¬â¢s alleged base in Quetta. Since the summer of 2008, U. S. military and intelligence agencies are sharing minimal intelligence with its Pakistani counterparts, instead focusing on drone attacks against suspected terrorist movements and hideouts. Pakistan is a signatory to the UNââ¬â¢s Palermo Convention. At the regional level, Pakistan has signed and ratified SAARC Regional Convention on the Suppression of Terrorism and the SAARC Convention on Narcotic Drugs Substances and the ECO Protocol against drugs. It has extradition treaties with 29 countries and bilateral agreements or MOUs on terrorism with 50 countries. Pakistan has played a major role in eliminating a number of terror networks such as the Al-Qaeda Anthrax network, the Alghuraba network, the UK-based Anglo-Pakistani group and Jundullah. Prominent targets captured include Khalid Sheikh Muhammad, Abu Alfaraj Alibi, Al Shib, Abu Zubaida, Abu Talha, Khalid bin Attash or Walid bin Attish, Ahmed Khalfan Ghailani, Mohammad Naeem Noor Khan, Abu Laith al-Libi, Hasan Bana, Hamza Rabbi, Sharif Al Masri, Abu Mushab Masri, Jaffar Uttayyar Alkashmiri Yassir Al-Jaziri, and Abdul Rehman Al-Masri. Umar Patek was arrested in Abbottabad by Pakistani forces and may have provided important leads to Osama bin Ladenââ¬â¢s whereabouts. Since 9/11, Pakistan has also become a victim of terrorism. The direct and indirect cost suffered by Islamabad in the war on terror has been around US$ 35 billion. There has been a constant increase in the number of terror attacks in Pakistan since 9/11 and a number of prominent Pakistanis have lost their lives in such attacks. These include the two-time Prime Minister of Pakistan Benazir Bhutto and the former head of the Pakistan Armyââ¬â¢s Special Service Group, Maj. Gen. (Rtd) Ameer Faisal Alvi. Most of the jihadists in Pakistan, especially the splinter groups of various organizations, are now operating under the umbrella of TTP, a Deobandi Sunni organization established in December 2007. TTPââ¬â¢s objectives include cleansing Pakistan of foreign, meaning the U. S. and overall Western, presence, implementing Sharia and establishing a Caliphate. Over the years, TTP has been involved in a number of suicide bombings, rocket attacks, remote controlled bombs, abductions, and beheadings. It has widened its area of operations beyond Pakistanââ¬â¢s tribal areas and targeted a number of government installations and organizations in the mainland, including the Federal Investigation Agencyââ¬â¢s Lahore office, the Naval War College in Lahore, the Marriott Hotel in Islamabad, the Wah ordinance Factory, the Sri Lankan cricket team in Lahore, a police training school, the GHQ Rawalpindi and the Navyââ¬â¢s Mehran base in Karachi. It is also involved in kidnapping for ransom, bank robberies, forced taxes and drug trade. IMPLICATIONS: Since 9/11, the TTP has increasingly converged with the staunchly anti-Shia militant group Lashkar-e-Jhangvi. A number of prominent TTP operations were conducted by known Lashkar-e-Jhangvi operatives. In recent months, the Hazaras in Baluchistan are increasingly becoming a prime target of the Lashkar-e-Jhangvi. Both TTP and Lashkar-e-Jhangvi consider Shias kafirs (infidels) and hence legitimate targets. Terrorist activities showed no sign of receding in 2012, indicating that after more than a decade of fighting terror, Pakistan is nowhere close to the finishing line in this war and the problem is taking an even uglier shape. According to various sources, Pakistan suffered more than 6000 casualties in different terror attacks in 2012. More than 450 terror attacks were recorded in 2012 in which at least 39 were confirmed suicide attacks. Another important development in 2012 was the increasing operational alliance between the TTP and Lashkar-e-Jhangvi, although the two groups have cooperated with each other also in the past, the group led by Amjad Farooqi in 2003-2004 being a case in point. However, in 2012 the two groups largely converged operationally in the sense that they declared a war against Shias. This convergence has resulted in the worst attacks to date against Shias, especially the Hazaras in Baluchistan. In 2012, Shias were targeted in 113 attacks in which 396 people lost their lives, indicating the increasingly sectarian features of Pakistanââ¬â¢s terrorism problem. So far, more than a thousand terror-related deaths have occurred in 2013. Apart from a closer alliance emerging between TTP and Lashkar-e-Jhangvi, TTP has also established Ansar Al-Aseerian (Helpers of the prisoners) in partnership with the Islamic Movement of Uzbekistan. According to media reports, Adnan Rasheed has been appointed the head of this group. The purpose of this group is to free all militants held in custody by Pakistani security forces and in various jails. TTP is also attempting to expand its activities and area of influence to Karachi, Pakistanââ¬â¢s major financial hub. Karachi, which is also considered to be Pakistanââ¬â¢s major Pashtun center, has been a preferred hideout for TTP, while some TTP and other jihadi activists have received medical treatment in Karachi. 2013 also witnessed two developments that will have long lasting effect on Pakistanââ¬â¢s war against terrorism. Firstly, Pakistanââ¬â¢s national Assembly unanimously passed the National Counter Terrorism Authority Bill 2013 on March 8, 2013. The establishment of a National Counter Terrorism Authority (NCTA) will play an important role in the efforts to combat terrorism. According to the mandate given to NCTA, it will ââ¬Å"coordinate counter terrorism and counter extremism efforts in view of the nature and magnitude of the terrorist threat; and to present strategic policy options to the government for consideration/implementation by the stakeholders after scientifically studying the phenomenon of extremism and terrorism in historic and professional perspective. â⬠Secondly, Pakistanââ¬â¢s army is taking a tougher stance and increasing its attention to the terrorism problem, as indicated by the decision of Pakistanââ¬â¢s army chief to treat the problem of terrorism as an operational priority. 013 is also an election year in Pakistan, with national and provincial elections scheduled for May 11, 2013. TTP has already targeted a number of political events in Khyber Paktunkhwa and especially the Awami National Partyââ¬â¢s election campaign. The political party or parties that will form the next government will not only inherit a crisis in the energy and financial sectors but will also have to make hard decisions about the countryââ¬â¢s war against terror. CONCLUSIONS: Developments in Pakistan suggest that the countryââ¬â¢s terror problem will only increase in the lead-up to 2014 and Pakistan will have to fight its war on terror well beyond 2014, if concrete and decisive steps against TTP and Lashkar-e-Jhangvi are not taken. Both organizations want Pakistan to be a Sunni state and are increasingly targeting Shias. The Pakistani people and armed forces have paid a huge price in people and material in this ongoing war. Unless Pakistan addresses the root causes of the problem, it will not only persist but also get worse. How to cite Pakistanââ¬â¢s War on Terror Up to and Beyond 2014, Essays

Time Essays - Allegory, Siddhartha, Gautama Buddha,
Time Part I: The Tao Of Dani Time is an illusion because there is no real truth to it. It has never been proven to exist. It was made up by the Romans or the Babylonians thousands of years ago so farmers could meet on a hill top at 1 in the afternoon because one farmer's wife had a hair appointment at noon. Human beings have a born inhibition to have things simpler. Human beings also have to have explanations and reasoning. Time was born out of this. The grand old theory that time is a river. The whole river exists at once: the mouth (future), the main body (present), and the source (past). The only truth we have to time is the wear and tear on our bodies as time (sic) goes on. Technically, there is no now and there is no future because now was over a nano-second ago and the future is uncertain (but the end is always near). Which is plain truth because the end is nearer and nearer but you'll never know it. Bang... and everything spurts out from one central point. Flowing, clumping, sparking, rolling across nothing to make something. A few years later, the universe is formed. Things evolve and change and yet everything stays the same. Cells become smart and grow nuclei, which form unicellular organisms, everything feeds off everything else. Things die off, some things live, animals come to be, and all of a sudden you have humans that are just as much fish as they are bacteria as they are stardust. Everything depends on everything else. The universe is me because I am human, thusforth made up of everything and doing my part to keep the world going rather I like it or not. I am the universe because I can almost control what goes on. I am also the universe because I am part of it, we move together, we live together, we love together. This "I am the universe" can also be explained in a sense of which that humans make themselves gods. We don't hug trees, we crap on them. We don't love animals, we butcher them. But we have to do this to survive. Then we ponder meaning lessly at the problems of overpopulation and natural disasters. You are part of natural disasters, like it or not. The distinction between been, being, and becoming is artificial and arbitrary because if time is irrelevant, then you could never have been, or you could never become, you just are. Like the river, you are everything all at once. At any given instance, you bring all your conscious and subconscious knowledge to the table for discussion. All of your past experiences, dreams, realizations, mishaps, good hair days, etc. are with you forever as you go along. You never leave anything behind, therefore you could not possibly have ever been. (This also opens up a discussion about how every nanosecond of your life exists at once; the theory of dimensions.) Everything you are to become is already chosen for you by something called destiny, you just aren't aware of it yet. This is also due to post experiences, etc. The distinction between the three aforementioned is that there is no distinction because of the artificial and arbitrary sense. (If something isn't there, it doesn't exist.) Humans m ake things up to make life easier. They made the theory of been, being, and becoming up to make it easier to convey thoughts. Humans learned to speak to improve their life styles. All the other organisms have been doing just since the big bang, without a spoken or written language. Time is related to the unity of all things in the fact that over "time" the universe has evolved and change to become what it is today. In fact, the universe will still evolve and change until it reaches its limit and begins devolving. The universe is me at this moment because I am here and know that everything around me is due to me. This is just as I am due to everything around me. This is due to "time." I know at this moment, because I am here at this moment, aware at this moment that I am the universe

Death Penalty, Why Its Bad essays
Death Penalty, Why It's Bad essays The Death Penalty. A heated debate? A pressing issue? Only in America. The United States of America is the only industrialized democratic nation in the world that still uses the death penalty. There are several primary reasons why the death penalty should be exonerated. Reason one: The Death Penalty is unfairly applied throughout the country. In Furman v. Georgia, the death penalty was banned because it was being sentenced without standards or order. Even though that Supreme Court case was overturn four years later, the problem still exists. A man who is convicted of murder in Texas (a state with over 250 executions and 450 more on Death Row last year) is more likely to be sentenced to death than a man who is convicted of murder in Connecticut (a state where the death penalty has been legal for over 7 years and there has not been one execution.) It is also unfairly distributed among minorities and the impoverished. Since the death penalty was reinstated in 1976, 158 black defendants have been executed for the murder of a white victim, while only 11 white defendants have been executed for the murder of a black victim. And, as O.J. Simpsons lawyer once said: Money doesnt buy justice, lack of money buys injustice. People who are able to pay for their own attorneys, as well as those who are able to afford bail, are more likely not to be sentenced to death. Reason Two: The Death Penalty does not deter crime. Some people, such as the President of the United States, believe that the death penalty deters crime. They are wrong; states that do not have the death penalty have lower murder rates than those who do. Furthermore, the U.S. has higher murder rates than those of Canada and Europe, which do not have the death penalty. A survey of the former and present presidents of the country's top academic criminological societies found that 84% of these experts rejected the notion t ...

Station Nightclub Fire Research Paper Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1250 words - 1
Station Nightclub Fire - Research Paper Example The video footage reveals that the smoke of the fire acted as the disincentive for the crowd to break through and the exit blockade acted as the catalyst (NIST Engineering Laboratory, 2011). The first flames were thought to be the part of the act. When the flames reached the ceiling and the smoke began to spread all throughout the club, people realized that the fire is not under control. Within a few seconds after the polytechnics ended the band stopped to play and most band members took the escape route through the west. The fire alarm of the club acutely made everyone aware of the danger while most tried to take the way through which they entered. The massive crowd led to stampede and the exit got completely blocked. This resulted in deaths and severe injuries for the staffs. After the tragedy the Governor declared a moratorium on the displays of pyrotechnic for the venues that can hold less than 300 people. After five months of the accident, the band started a benefit tour. A portion of the generated proceeds were forwarded to the Station Family Fund. The site was cleared and the relatives left a multitude of crosses for the deceased. The members who managed to survive intended to acquire the site and place a permanent memorial. Since the month of May, 2003, nondenominational services started at the fire site on monthly basis. The members of the affected families and the friends who lost their dear ones gathered to take part in the memorial. The Station Fire Memorial Foundation was formed in June, 2003. The purpose of the foundation was to purchase the property and take care of the memorial. The Foundation is still continuing the services on yearly basis. Investigations started to dig out the cause of the fire. The investigation included local and the f ederal agencies. The investigators interviewed the witnesses and visited the scene. Movie write-up Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 750 words
Movie write-up - Essay Example It should be noted that the first movie entitled Ghana- Women in Politics is very inspiring to me. It is because the activist Helen Koranteng, being a political actor has spread awareness regarding women right in Ghana. The movie includes variations of facts regarding Ghana and the female population who are more likely to be a changing factor for the country. This is one of the reasons that the movie can be used as a guide for people who wants to know the role of women in Ghana or the policies that are available for the women to practice in case they want to gain social mobility in their society (Stromberg,P., 2011). The fact remains that there has been a gap of research conducted to understand the respective roles of women in the politics of Ghana. The ideology and methods that have been applied by the leader to reach out to the population of Ghana is another important factor that has been missing in other videos based upon the same subject of matter. I am very cynical when it comes to understanding the mandate of political leaders because not all of them are able to cater the basic needs of the nation. In this regarding, the political actor namely Helen Koranteng is quiet focused as she knows the targeted population. There are many insight facts that were also brought forward to allow people to understand the international forum of women. A comparative understanding has been presented in the movie which shows that a lot of efforts are still needed to be made (Council on Foreign Relations, 2011). The second movie that I watched was Liberiaââ¬â¢s Sirleaf: Reform in Africa that I did not like. It was because I do not affirm with the ideology of the Liberian president named Ellen Johnson Sirleaf. She was continuously stressing on the point that there is an avid need of investment in the country. It should be noted that this is not the need of the people. It is an evident fact that

Similarities Between Dick Diver and Abe North in Tender is the Night Es
Similarities Between Dick Diver and Abe North in Tender is the Night à à à à à Dick Diver and Abe North are characters in F. Scott Fitzgeraldââ¬â¢s novel, Tender is the Night. As presented in the beginning of the novel, Dick Diver and Abe North did not seem to have much in common.à As the character of Dick Diver developed, the reader found the characters to be parallel to each other. There were numerous unexpected similarities as the novel progressed. The presentation of Abe North's character ââ¬Å"served as a preview to the fate of Dick Diverâ⬠(Stern, 117). The characters' deterioration, relationships with their wives, and their effects on the other characters were some of the main similarities between Dick Diver and Abe North. à At the start of the novel the characters of Dick Diver and Abe North seemed to contrast. Dick was hospitable and admired by many. Meanwhile, Abe had already deteriorated in character. The first thing that was said about Abe was negative. When Abe first appeared Mrs. McKisco conveyed her opinion of him to Rosemary, "Well, he's a rotten musician." (Fitzgerald, 8). This statement was related to the lack of progress in Abe's profession as clarified by Brady, "he was a musician who after a brilliant and precocious start had composed nothing for seven years." (Fitzgerald, 33). Proceeding from these descriptions, Abe character was reduced to a pitiful drunkard. However, Abe was not always the "loser" as Nicole pointed out, "Abe used to be so nice... So nice. Long ago-when Dick and I were first married. If only you had known him then." (Fitzgerald, 99). à At this point of the novel it seems that Dick has control of his life in comparison to Abe North. Yet, Dick's own career was stagnant. Unlike Abe howe... ...gradation were parallel. A comment made by Nicole in the beginning of the novel now appears to be a forecast on the fate of Dick and Abe, "So many smart men go to pieces nowadays." (Fitzgerald, 99). à Works Cited and Consulted: Bruccoli, Matthew J. The Composition of Tender Is the Night. Pittsburgh: University of Pittsburgh Press, 1963. Fitzgerald, F. Scott. Earth Sociology Essay
The author of the book entitled Down to Earth Sociology focused his writings on conceptual issues regarding the social interactions of the people in everyday life including the aspect of understanding the individual experiences in the society and the analysis of the different dominant social cultures. The selections of the said book also emphasizes the different significant themes of the modern sociology including sociological analysis of the concept of gender, power, politics, sports, religion, racial tensions, crimes, poverty, homelessness, and the global outlook of economic capitalism. In this book, the author Henslin presented his ideas and analysis in the same scientific manner and process that is being implemented by the contemporary sociologist of the modern age. Through this, the book has able to critically analyze and present every intricate detail that is involved in the sociological research as guided by the main concept of the hypothesis. The book presented its views in relation to the present hypothetical concepts and theories in trying to explain and interpret the different social phenomena in the modern civilization. Included in the book of Henslin are detailed discussions of the different sociological theories that are guiding the research and development pursuit of the said field. These sociological theories are defined to have been developed at multiple levels, ranging from large theory to highly definite and explicit small-scale ones. Rather than thinking of one theory being excellent to the other theories it is more beneficial as well as informative to view these different theories as correlation with each other. One of the sociological theories on how to explain different phenomena that has been elaborated is the Structural-Functionalism, which is defined as a sociological theory that pertains on how to explain several social institutions as a means to be able to satisfy or fulfill the individualââ¬â¢s biological means. Another theory that has been discussed in Henslinââ¬â¢s book is the Conflict theory that is explained as a sociological theory that points out that society is not about unity or universal agreement but rather this theory is all about competition. According to this theory, society consists of different individuals who are competing for the limited supply of resources. An example of this conflict is in the Legislative branch of the United States Government wherein men are still viewed as more powerful and superior over women when it comes to the politics. As an effect, womenââ¬â¢s privileges to express their opinions and ideas are still significantly limited. In this situation, it is clearly stated that there is a clash or conflict between genders, which also illustrate the obvious concept of inequality between men and women. Aside from the ones previously mentioned, another theory that was discussed by Henslin is the Symbolic Interactionalism that is discussed as a sociological approach on how to understand the proximity or relationship between human and society. The basic idea of Symbolic Interactionalism is that human action and interaction are only by means of exchanging substantial communications and symbols. Based on this theory, humans and lower forms of animals are different from each other because lower form of animals can easily respond to the environment while the human being has the capability to interrupt this process. In addition, lower forms of animals do not have the capability in conceiving different alternative responses to gestures unlike human beings they can easily grasp different gestures. Another theory is the Role Theory; this pertains to the different roles represented by an individual in their everyday lives such as the father, secretary, or friend. For instance, most people their notion or representations of secretary include: answering phone calls, making and managing appointments, filling different paper works, and typing memorandums. These different roles of a secretary could not be expected of professional basketball player. Basically, every individual have different personalities and roles in the society. In addition, the book entitled Down to earth sociology by James M. Henslin focused on real life situation in which all the readers can surely relate. Henslinââ¬â¢s book is indeed user friendly, entertaining to read and indeed valuable because it talks about actual life situations and social phenomenon. The sociological perspectives that is generally employed in the book enables the people to look below the surface of social life and examine different factors that shape our behavior, attitudes, and culture as well as our beliefs in life. The War Of The American War - 1370 Words
Meanwhile, one of the most difficult issues with Vietnam was that the American public was against the war because it was not a just war; so, upon their return home soldiers were treated not with a heroââ¬â¢s welcome but with hate-filled shouts of ââ¬Å"baby killerâ⬠(Newman 6). As a result, it was hard for a soldier to find peace with the acts of war he/she had committed, whether morally right or wrong, when the public viewed the war as totally meaningless. General Westmoreland makes the same observation, ââ¬Å"I recognized that it was not the job of the military to defend American commitment and policy. Yet it was difficult to differentiate between pursuit of a military task and such related matters as public and congressional support and the morale of the fighting man, who must be convinced that he is risking death for a worthy cause. The military thus was caught in betweenâ⬠(Summers 29). Vietnam was also the first time television crews were allowed access to all as pects of war leading to the loss of innocence with a nation itself. Each night America would sit in front of the television for the nightly news and watch in horror. The numbers of the wounded and killed were reported daily during the news. Over fifty thousand military personnel lost their lives in Vietnam. Consequently, America lost its innocence and belief in its government. Prohibition And The Prohibition Of America - 1298 Words
The prohibition was a divided experiment that unintentionally brought organized crime, flourished the presence of speakeasies in America and created a high rise of criminals in America. The backfiring of the prohibition brought America an uprising in organized crime; criminals and the consumption, manufacturing and selling of alcohol became more expensive and profitable to those involved. Silk suits, guns, money and booze were the popular credentials amongst the finest in the bootlegging and mob business. The prohibition had been recognized as an extraordinary business opportunity and was exploited as such. In most major cities, gangs had been stocking up on alcohol in anticipation for the beginning of the ban, leaving them with a guaranteed profit. Alcohol became a keen part of the more urban culture of the 1920s despite the ban. People sought out alcohol at illegal bars, known as speakeasies and through bootlegging. The authorities of the time had earned the reputation of turning a blind eye to the illegal consumption and production of alcohol, for the right price. Gangsters ruled the cities and in most cases, owned their streets. Bribing government officials was common, and people were increasingly crafty in the way they would hide alcohol such as hollowed out canes, false books and hip flasks. For instance, in the Netherland and S witzerland, where marijuana is legalized, the consumptionRead MoreProhibition : America s Unhappy Hour Essay1726 Words à |à 7 PagesSpencer Andersen Mr. Jonathan Walker HIS 132-100 8 November 2015 Prohibition: Americaââ¬â¢s Unhappy Hour In the United States, the consumption of alcohol is more or less ingrained in American culture. But bullying is more than just a part of growing up. It is a form of aggressiveness or violent behavior shown to children who are quiet, shy or unsociable. We will write a custom essay sample on Bullying or any similar topic only for you Order Now Bullying can often be started with rumors and can result in very serious and unimaginable consequences such as suicide. Since bullying is such a prevalent problem in todays world, a solution is necessary to stop this atrocious act from being committed. Bullying occurs when kids arenââ¬â¢t tolerant of each other, therefore they will start picking on one another. There are different types of bullying. The most common form is cyber bullying. This one and verbal bullying are one of the most hurtful types someone could ever experience. Iââ¬â¢ve experienced both, at the age of twelve. I was new to the school, just like twenty other students; but for some reasons, they had decided to pick on me. It was a typical Tuesday, when I entered the classroom, everyone was surrounding one of my classmates laptop. Like any other curious student would, I went to see what was going on. On this boyââ¬â¢s screen was a picture of me he had gotten from Facebook, with the head of a horse replacing mine. Everyone was laughing. My response to this was violence, which actually motivated them even more since I was responding to their provocation. If bullying goes on for a long while, there can be negative effects. 86 percent of students said that bullying causes students or teens to turn violent. I can totally relate to this statistic. At first, I tried ignoring name calling and hurtful comments about my looks. But as it grew bigger, I had become aggressive as a way of dealing with frustration. Researchers from Finland discovered that victims suffer from anxiety disorders, such as depression, panic disorder, etc. Sometimes the disorders can also cause difficulties with the victimsââ¬â¢ family and friends. I had become very distant and arrogant with my family, especially with my mother. I would release all the tension I had gotten from school onto her. I also felt lonely and sad. My self-esteem had decreased and so did my social life. In some cases, the bullying may be so severe and may go on for so long that the victim may actually commit suicide, which is called bullycide when related to bullying. There are many strategies you can use to stop bullies and to help others. As a victim, you need to stand up for yourself. The best way to deal with bullies and bullying is to ask other people for help. Victims may go to friends, teachers, parents, or other adults for help. After my mother found out about what was happening she talked to the bulliesââ¬â¢ parents and everything had ceased the next day. Another important part of dealing with a bully is remaining calm and not letting the bully get a reaction out of you. Bullies want to feel a sense of power over their victims. However, bullies only have this sense of power if you give it to them. Donââ¬â¢t! Make sure that you stay calm. Bullying is a universal problem faced by kids of every age. It happens in schools, neighborhoods, and homes every single day. It can end into very serious circumstances and can ruin someoneââ¬â¢s life. Bullying is not worth suffering for so donââ¬â¢t wait for it to get worse, donââ¬â¢t be scared to ask for help or help others. How to cite Bullying, Papers

Brisbane Outdoors Purchasing and Inventory Management
Question: Describe about the Brisbane Outdoors Purchasing and Inventory Management, Answer: Introduction Purchasing and Inventory Management is that system which is helpful in identifying the flow of products and services within the organization (Jones, P Robinson, P, 2012). In order to meet the organizational needs, a company may decide to implement inventory management techniques (Scott, S, 2016). Such techniques are needed to create invoices, purchase orders, receipts generation and control accounts that are related to the inventories. Organizations usually maintain inventories policies so that these policies can helps in smooth functioning and thus making large investment by the company (Hamlett, K, 2016). In relation to the given case study of Brisbane Outdoor Power Centre, we can say that operation management plays a very important role in managing the purchase and availability of inventories. Operations Management is that area of management that is related to the control and design of various process of production (Martinich, J, 2008). Thus it is the responsibility of the business to conduct efficient operations. We can see in the case study that Brisbane Outdoor has three retail locations and it is very important to control and develop a strategic operational process. Now Belinda Green is the new owner of this company, and has identified ways to achieve the common goal of the organization rather than focusing on individual interests of these three departments. Current Purchasing and Inventory Management processes used by Brisbane Outdoor Brisbane currently uses Decentralization process in purchasing and maintaining its inventories. Decentralized purchasing, means purchasing materials for different department independently to accomplish their needs. This system helps in making purchases in case of emergency. An immediate action can be taken in an urgent situation. Brisbane has three stores and all three stores are managing their activities without taking into consideration the activities of other departments. The company hold a good reputation among its customers and has been successful in building a trust factor amongst them. The customers relied on their tools for its performance, after sales service and obtainable supplies. The customers where actually very attracted to the company as they had very knowledgeable and experienced staffs who were always ready to give free advice to their potential customers. The company was famous for holding the high quality merchandise. Customers said that they can easily buy the pr oducts that they desire in a cheap price from some other company but they will not be offered with such high quality products. This made Brisbane one of the best industries. Brisbane was busy making purchases in a decentralised form as it reduced the burden on the top authorities of the company. Whole responsibility was put on the shoulder of the immediate executive. The top management were able to concentrate on other important managerial areas. This system was adopted to decentralise the decision taking power to the subordinates. The employees of Brisbane were highly motivated since they had a large degree of authority. The managers made independent decisions when it was an urgent task. Comparative advantages and disadvantages of Decentralization The key advantage of making decentralized decisions that is taken on an individual basis by those personnel who are much aware of the factors and upcoming events of the local areas. They are actually in that position which allows anticipating special promotions that are strictly local in nature. Furthermore, this helps the purchasing manager to be aware of various inputs related to the plans of their potential customers. As a result this allows the local management to manage and control the inventories to keep a sense of desirable ownership. Advantages of Decentralization Purchasing Better control: Brisbane is providing better supervision and control because the employees are allowed to make independent decisions; due to this the subordinates can gain knowledge related to the task under their control. The subordinates can even make necessary amendments and can take corrective action. Empowering employees: The employees of Brisbane are empowered by holding autonomy to make decisions on their own. They feel their importance make them to work effectively to give more inputs. Relieving burden: The burden of the owners of Brisbane is reduced. The owners are looking to other serious issues that have to be controlled rather than focusing on purchasing and inventories management that is not a priority area of supervision. Prepares for emergency: When the top management authorities of Brisbane are away and an immediate action has to be taken, in this case the subordinates are free to act during emergencies without having to wait for the chain command. Ease of Expansion: For a growing business like Brisbane, The process of expansion can be facilitates by decentralization system. A new business can be opened in new geographical area that can be operated independently (Toomey, J, 2012). It has the capacity to act with ease to the specific needs such as making decision to purchase those products that can help in producing appealing products (Joseph, C, 2016). Disadvantages of Decentralization Purchasing Decentralization purchasing can be extremely beneficial but sometimes it can be dangerous unless it is not carefully constructed and monitored for the benefits of Brisbane as a whole. Some disadvantages that Brisbane has to face due to the purchase system are as follows: Uniform policies not followed: Under this system, the company is not being able to make uniform policies for the entire organization. The company is not capable of maintaining the standardised procedures. Each manager of Brisbane of three stores will have to work and frame different policies. Problem of Coordination: Brisbane is working smoothly but there is a lack of coordination among its various departments, as the authorities lies dispersed throughout the company. High financial burden in purchasing: Brisbane has been making purchases individually, and they are not availing any discounts from their suppliers. When purchase is made in bulk the suppliers can be negotiated and agreed upon giving supplies in a discounted rate. Required qualified personnel: Brisbane has to hire highly qualified managers with experience so maintain the activities of each department. We know that decentralization system becomes a waste if there is a lack of qualified and competent personnel (Weele, A Weele, A, 2005). Conflict: In Brisbane the responsibility lies on the head of different managerial personnel. Often in meeting the plan implemented by various managers brings conflicts among them. This will bring a bad impact on the functioning of the company. Supply chain and inventory management concepts Currently Brisbane is following decentralization process in purchasing and maintaining inventories. Due to change in ownership it becomes essential to look after the loopholes of the company and make necessary changes to solve the problems that arise because of old traditional process. Brisbane will be able to increase their efficiency and reduce investment and maintain adequate stock by adopting the centralized system. The advantages of this system are explained below to give a clear look of its comparative benefits. Advantages of Centralization The centralized purchasing will help Brisbane to tap the competitive advantage of specialized skill of the staffs who makes purchases. The duplication function will be completely eliminated when all the three departments will purchase their inventories collectively by one purchase manager (Li, L, 2007). The manufacturing manager and the heads of other departments including the office managers will be relieved from the responsibility of purchasing individual requirements. They can concentrate on other areas that are more important in the business (Wisner, J, Tan, K Leong, G, 2014). Brisbane can strengthen its bargaining position as a buyer by makes purchases in bulks. This will tap a quantity discount, thus reducing the involvement of intermediaries (Pizzey, M, 1989). The company can now maintain a good relation with their suppliers, as there will be only few buyers (Monczka, R et al., 2015). It will enable Brisbane Outdoor to make standardized purchase through standardized procedure. The inventory carrying cost will also be reduced along with other costs related to the storage of inventories by different departments. The transport cost will also be reduced if Brisbane starts making collective purchases. A large supply will be received by making consolidated orders (Day, M, 2002). In this process the company will be making few orders of large quantities which will reduce the cost related to placing, inspection, receiving and accounts of the inventories. One departmental head will be assigned with specific responsibility and it becomes easy to hold liable of that head that makes wrong decision. The person behind misconduct can be easily held liable. Scarce materials according to the economical advantage can be allocated easily, thus adjusting the intersection requirements of the materials. Brisbane is a small sized organization having three departments, so it is preferable to make purchases by centralizing its activities. This way the power will be concentrated in the hands of a single head, creating coordination and cooperation in leadership. Centralization is usually recommended when the company has inadequate control over the practices of the management (Hurley, M, 1980). All the three departments should allocate the tasks to one head for example give purchasing task to one head that is the purchasing manager who can make purchase on behalf of all the three stores. This will decrease the cost as purchase will be made in bulk. Transportation cost will also be reduced. Recommendations to reconstruct the purchasing and inventory functions It is an important issue to decide whether an organization should make purchase and inventory systems collectively or in an individual basis (Hill, C, Schilling, M Jones, G, 2016). The decision should be based on following matters: The distance between the central go down and the production centres. The transportation cost and risk involved (Pooler, D Pooler, V, 2012). The nature of materials, whether the material is heavy, bulky or fragile. The firms policy and the comparative advantages and disadvantages of both systems. According to the goals and objectives of Brisbane, it is recommendable to make purchases and manage inventories in a centralised form because of the comparative advantages that it holds (Mok, K, 2004). All these years Brisbane was practicing its activities smoothly and efficiently. Due to the change in leadership and ownership, it is essential to make some changes in the structure of company. Brisbane will surely be able to make high profits by controlling its duplication process by avoiding the reckless process of purchasing. When Ms. Green took a round in the three location stores she was concerned about the system that company was following all the years. Now that she is aware of the disadvantages that Brisbane has been facing, she wants to change the system of entire organization. Mt Gravatt, Strathpine and Ipswich will appoint one head under purchase department so that the authority can make better deals. This will create a better layout of each store. Brisbane will now maintain economy in recording and an accounting system that is systematic and appropriate. Conclusion Brisbane Outdoor is has a good reputation among their customers due to its exceptionally excellent services. It has three departments that perform their activities independently irrespective of the situation and conditions of other departments. The ownership of Brisbane has been changed and the new owner wants to change its purchasing system so that the activities of these three departments can be coordinated and the employees can coordinate their activities. Mt Gravatt, Strathpine and Ipswich will appoint one purchasing and inventory head so that the company can maintain their funds, make better accountability and keep healthy relationship with their suppliers. Suppliers of Brisbane will allow discount when the purchase will be made in bulk. Coordination and cooperation will help Brisbane to achieve their common goals in an effective and efficient manner.
